Breast lifts, or mastopexy procedures, are usually performed to reverse the inevitable sagging that comes with age and child bearing; however, younger patients also present with premature sagging (also called “ptosis”). Breast lift surgery is designed to reposition the breast and elevate the nipple to a more youthful position on the chest – improving tone and firmness. Breast lifts can also reshape abnormally long or pointy breasts and adjust the size of extremely large nipples and areolas.

Breast Lift Surgery – What to Expect

  • Surgical Setting – breast lift or “mastopexy” is performed in the office or as an outpatient procedure at a Boston area hospital
  • Anesthesia – some breast lift procedures can be performed under a local anesthetic but most procedures will require intravenous sedation or general anesthesia
  • Surgical Incisions – minor breast lifts (usually performed in conjunction with breast augmentation) require incisions limited to the area around the nipple. More significant lifts require additional incisions under the breast
  • Post Surgery – usually patients take 1 week off from work, but they feel well within a few days. Discomfort is mild and light exercise is permitted in 2 weeks; heavy exercise has to wait for 6 weeks. Swelling and bruising abate within 2 weeks but final breast lift results are judged 3 to 6 months after surgery.
