Is Eyelid Surgery Right for Me?

This procedure can either be performed as upper blepharoplasty on the upper set of lids or lower blepharoplasty for the lower set of lids. In the case of quadrilateral eyelid surgery, the operation is performed on all four of the patient’s eyelids.

Eyelid Surgery – What to Expect

  • About the Surgery – Blepharoplasty eliminates excess skin from the eyelids, removes small pockets of fat that contribute to a “puffy” look, and lifts and tightens remaining skin. Because it can address puffy undereye bags, many call it undereye bag surgery.
  • Anesthesia – Local anesthesia or IV sedation (unless the surgery is being performed in conjunction with a facelift) is used.
  • Surgical Incisions – Precise surgical techniques make it possible to hide incision lines along the natural creases of the eye, making scarring inconspicuous. For upper eyelid surgery, the incision is made in the crease of the upper lid. For lower eyelid surgery, the incision can either be placed at the lash line or inside the eyelid, leaving no external scar.

The Eyelid Surgery Recovery Process

Once the procedure is over, patients can return home to rest and heal. They must arrange for a ride home from a friend or family member in advance, since they will not be able to drive immediately after the surgery.

There is little post-operative pain following eye lift surgery. Swelling and bruising can be conspicuous but will resolve over a period of 1 to 2 weeks as part of the recovery process. Cold compresses can help to reduce these issues.

Exercise is permitted at 2 weeks. All evidence of the surgery is barely noticeable after just a few weeks.

How Much Does Eyelid Surgery Cost?

In most cases, the cost of blepharoplasty is not covered by health insurance providers. However, when drooping eyelids partially obscure one’s vision, eyelid surgery to address this is considered functional and can be covered by health insurance. Generally, the price of this procedure is impacted by the techniques involved, the amount of tissue removed, and other factors.
