Liposuction, Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty), and More – Body Contouring Treatment in the Boston Area

Surgery to improve shape and body contour benefits an increasing number of patients every year. So many women in the prime of their life have had children and lost all tone in their abdomen, and despite hours at the gym can’t get their flat abdomen back. Other patients never had the shape they want because of excess fatty deposits on their flanks, thighs or abdomen. A growing number of patients now come to our office after a significant weight loss with loose redundant skin that no exercise program will help. Dr. Bartlett can find a solution for all of these problems with liposuction, tummy tuck surgery, and other body contouring techniques available through his Brookline plastic surgery center, near Boston. His meticulous care and precise surgical technique can restore a sleek silhouette and reverse the effects of childbirth, weight loss, or bad luck with fat deposits.

We have provided information on individualized body contouring procedures to help you understand what can be achieved and what is involved in terms of the actual procedure and recovery. Included at the end of each section is a link to the standardized instructions that are sent to each patient prior to treatment. After reviewing information on abdominoplasty, liposuction, gynecomastia treatment, and body contouring after weight loss, we suggest a consultation with Dr. Bartlett at our office in Brookline, located in one of Boston’s premier medical buildings.

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

Dr. Bartlett is recognized for his skill in creating a more youthful, sculpted look for loose, bulging abdomens with tummy tuck surgery. Patients who are concerned with the appearance of their abdomen are carefully evaluated by Dr. Bartlett to define their particular problem. The most common abdominoplasty candidates are those with loose skin with wrinkling (especially around the belly button), and separation of abdominal muscles with bulging and skin which hangs over the belt line (abdominal pannus). The severity of each problem varies from patient to patient and an individualized treatment will be developed during your tummy tuck consultation at our office near Boston. Some patients are candidates for smaller “mini” abdominoplasty procedures or “modified” intermediate procedures.

Abdominoplasty Surgery – What to Expect

Abdominoplasty procedures are performed under a general anesthetic. Although smaller procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis most patients undergoing a full abdominoplasty stay overnight in the hospital. The procedure takes 2-3 hours. Patients are sent home with drains in place which have to be emptied each day at home. Showering is permitted on day three and the first post-op visit happens one week after surgery, (drains are usually removed at that time). Unlike some of the more limited operations that are performed in plastic surgery, abdominoplasty involves a careful recovery. Most patients require two weeks off from work and cannot lift heavy objects for six weeks. The good news is that the benefits of a tummy tuck are worth the recovery. Patients who would previously not tuck in their blouse or wear a bathing suit feel great about their new shape.

Liposuction

Liposuction is one the most popular plastic surgery procedures because it is highly effective in removing unwanted fatty deposits and recovery is rapid. However, liposuction surgery must be performed with care to assure the best result and minimize problems. During liposuction procedures, Dr. Bartlett applies his usual perfectionism and aesthetic eye to sculpt fatty tissue and create a smooth, pleasing contour.

Liposuction – What to Expect

Liposuction can address fat pads on hips, thighs, abdomens, arms, necks and other areas of the body. The liposuction procedure can be performed in our Brookline office or as an outpatient procedure at a Boston area hospital. Anesthesia options are local, intravenous sedation or general anesthetic depending on the wishes of the patient. After the operation, patients are required to wear a compression garment for up to three weeks to speed up the healing process. Bruising is present for several weeks. Most of our patients need no more than a week off from work. With small liposuction procedures less time is required for recovery; Dr. Bartlett will discuss specific recommendations during a liposuction consultation at his Boston area practice.

What You Should Know

One misconception about liposuction is that it can be used to lose weight. Liposuction is not a weight loss strategy. Only a proper diet and exercise can help you achieve optimal weight and health. Patients who are significantly overweight are usually not candidates for liposuction. Liposuction is also useless for cellulite and loose skin. In fact, if your main problem is cellulite or loose skin, some other procedure such as a lift would be more appropriate.

Body Contouring After Weight Loss

One of the fastest growing areas in plastic surgery is body contouring surgery after massive weight loss. When patients have undergone gastric bypass surgery or lost weight on carefully managed diets, they are often left with large amounts of loose skin on their arms, neck, abdomen, and thighs. Body contouring surgery can help to restore a more normal contour by removing and tightening large amounts of skin. In many cases, multiple surgeries are necessary because there is so much to accomplish. All patients have to be evaluated by all of their doctors to make sure that preexisting medical conditions are recognized and addressed. As with all plastic surgery procedures that Dr. Bartlett performs, safety is the top priority. If you are interested in body contouring surgery to deal with loose skin, a full consultation at our Boston area office is required to assess your needs.
