A large number of men develop embarrassing excessive breast tissue at some point in their lives. The condition is known as gynecomastia and occurs as a result of increased levels of estrogen and limited amounts of testosterone. Some of the common triggers to this are obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, aging, medication, puberty, or an underlying health condition.

Men often decide to remedy the condition by exercising and changing their diet, but in a lot of cases, these alone will not be much help. The only sure way to remove male breasts is through a medical treatment known as breast reduction surgery.

Symptoms of Gynecomastia

Men and young boys who have enlarged breasts can be incredibly embarrassing. Men afflicted with the condition do not like to talk about it and usually wear shirts that can hide it from the world.

Gynecomastia may affect either one or both of the breasts and cause the chest to look similar to female breasts. The fatty tissue can be quite tender to the touch and even cause some physical pain in some cases.

The Male Breast Reduction Procedure

After the initial consultation with your surgeon, you will learn more about the procedure, including the variety of techniques that are used to remove the excess fat and skin in the breast region. Your surgeon will begin by administering general anesthesia and making an incision near the nipple to gain access to the excess fat. He will then remove it through liposuction.

If there is a large amount of excess fat and skin to remove, additional incisions will be made in the area. After it is removed, your surgeon will reposition the nipples for better symmetry. The procedure takes about an hour or so, depending on the amount of fat your surgeon needs to remove. Patients must remain in the hospital for a day or two after undergoing the surgery.

Recovery Period

After the procedure, you should plan to take it easy and relax for a couple of weeks to make sure you heal properly. In time, you will see a significant difference in your appearance, including a well-toned and contoured chest. After the surgery, you will be given compression garments to wear to hold everything in place. You should wear them as long as your doctor recommends.

Everyone heals at their own pace and your doctor will determine the length of time you need to wear the garments by analyzing your body’s response to the procedure. The stitches used will dissolve over time. You should refrain from excessive exercise or heavy lifting during your period of recovery.
