What is a Blepharoplasty or Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery, also known as a blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure involving the upper and/or lower eyelids. Blepharoplasty can address concerns such as drooping eyelids (ptosis), excess skin, or puffiness around the eyes, which can make a person appear older or more tired. The procedure can help to rejuvenate the eyes giving a more youthful and refreshed appearance.

Blepharoplasty can be performed in conjunction with other facial rejuvenation procedures such as facelift, neck lift, or facial fat transfer.

Blepharoplasty Consultation

If you are considering a blepharoplasty, the first step is a confidential consultation with Dr. Bartlett. At this time, he will perform a medical evaluation and listen carefully to understand your goals. Patients are screened for preexisting eye problems such as dry eye or glaucoma.  Dr. Bartlett will answer questions about the benefits and risks of eyelid surgery, describe the treatment process, and may discuss alternative treatment options.

Dr. Bartlett will create and personalize your surgical plan. You will be asked to arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home after the procedure. You may also be asked to stop or change your current medications as part of the preparation for surgery. This is because certain medications may result in increased bleeding and must be avoided.

Blepharoplasty Surgery and Recovery

Dr. Bartlett and his staff will review the details of the recovery process prior to surgery. Printed instructions and prescription medications will be provided ahead of time so that you are well prepared on the day of surgery.

Post-operative pain is often minimal. With upper eyelid blepharoplasty, most patients require only over-the-counter Tylenol. A light narcotic prescription is provided when undergoing lower eyelid surgery.

Vision may be blurred on the day of surgery and will rapidly return. Working on a laptop is permitted. Patients are recommended to avoid exercise for at least 2 weeks. Beginning at 2 weeks, light exercise is often permitted.

Swelling and bruising are common and may last for 1 to 2 weeks. This can be addressed with the help of cold compresses. Patients having the addition of a chemical peel will be instructed to apply ointment to the lower eyelids several times each day.

Sutures are removed within 1 to 2 weeks after surgery.  Most patients look well by 2 to 3 weeks after bruising has resolved. The final result is evaluated at least 6 months after surgery.

Blepharoplasty Procedure – What to expect

Blepharoplasty eliminates excess skin from the eyelids, removes small pockets of fat that contribute to a “puffy” look, and lifts and tightens remaining skin. With blepharoplasty surgery, incisions are meticulously made within the natural creases of the eyelid to minimize visible scarring.

Patients may have either upper eyelid surgery or lower eyelid surgery and some may have both. Blepharoplasty can be performed in conjunction with other facial rejuvenation procedures such as facelift, neck lift, and facial fat transfer. With lower eyelid surgery, fat transfers and/or a chemical peel may enhance the result.  If fat transfers are planned, a small amount of fat is harvested through a tiny incision in your abdomen or hips.

Patients having upper blepharoplasty usually have the procedure performed under local anesthesia and oral sedation. Lower eyelid surgery requires either IV sedation or general anesthesia.

1.5 to 3 hours. The exact duration of surgery will depend on the treatment plan, techniques used, and if there are other procedures performed at the same time. Many blepharoplasties are performed at the same time as a facelift which takes longer than 1.5 to 3 hours.

Most blepharoplasties are performed in an our AAAASF Certified office operating room. This confidential setting allows meticulous and personalized care.

"Everyone that’s ever known me has called me Mrs. Just So. In other words, I am very particular and also a perfectionist in all areas. I couldn’t have picked a better plastic surgeon. My husband and I met Dr. Bartlett and didn’t even feel that we had to get a second opinion. No one can even tell that I had this done. People will say, “Oh, I love your haircut, you look so good,” and then other people I tell will say, “Oh my god, I want his number.” They say they’ve never seen anyone look so natural. Dr. Bartlett is a perfectionist and very tedious and is an artist. He listens and cares and even called me over the weekend to see how I was doing. His entire staff is very friendly and knowledgeable as well. I would recommend Dr. Bartlett to anyone!"
