Tummy Tuck

What is an Abdominoplasty
An abdominoplasty, commonly referred to as a “tummy tuck,” is a surgical procedure aimed at improving the appearance of the abdomen by removing excess skin and fat and tightening the underlying muscles. It is often sought by individuals who have excess abdominal skin and weakened abdominal muscles, which may be a result of pregnancy, significant weight loss, aging, or genetics.
An abdominoplasty procedure can significantly improve the appearance of the abdomen by creating a flatter, firmer, and more contoured abdomen. However, it is important for patients to maintain a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise and a balanced diet, to maintain their results long-term.
Abdominoplasty Consultation
If you are considering an abdominoplasty, the first step is a confidential consultation with Dr. Bartlett. At this time, he will perform a medical evaluation and listen carefully to understand your goals. He will answer questions about the benefits and risks of surgery, describe the treatment process, and may discuss alternative treatment options.
Dr. Bartlett will create and personalize your surgical plan and discuss what to expect after your procedure. He will customize your pre-op and post-op instructions based on your medical evaluation. You may also be asked to stop or change your current medications as part of the preparation. This is because certain medications may result in increased bleeding and must be avoided.
Ideal candidates are in good health with a stable weight, and do not smoke. Dr. Bartlett may ask you to lose weight to optimize the result and to minimize complications.
Abdominoplasty Procedure – What to expect
Abdominoplasty is performed through an incision within the lower abdomen, typically extending from hip to hip, just above the level of the pubis. Most patients also have an incision around their belly button. Excess skin and fat are removed. Liposuction often enhances the result. If there is laxity within the abdominal muscles, a muscle plication is performed to repair the strength within the abdominal wall. In some cases the umbilicus, or naval, is repositioned to ensure a natural-looking result. A drain may be placed to reduce risk of fluid accumulation and incisions are meticulously closed with sutures. A compression band is applied to reduce swelling within the abdomen.
General anesthesia will be used for this procedure.
2 to 4 hours. The exact duration of surgery will depend on the treatment plan, techniques used, and if there are other procedures performed during your procedure.
Most abdominoplasties are performed in our AAAASF Certified office OR. in the Boston, Massachusetts, area. If multiple procedures are planned or if there are medical issues, the surgery may be performed in a hospital with an overnight stay.
Abdominoplasty and Recovery
You will be asked to arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home after the surgery and to help out during your recovery. Dr. Bartlett and his staff will go over the details of the recovery process, providing instructions and prescription medications ahead of time to allow the patient to have a safe and smooth recovery.
At the end of the operation, you will be wearing an abdominal binder, which will be used for three weeks. You may or may not have a drain.
Pain medication is typically used for 5 to 7 days after surgery. In patients who undergo muscle repair as part of the operation, movement will be slow during the first two weeks. Showering is permitted in most patients during the first week. Numbness and firmness may persist for months but do not affect appearance. The final result is evaluated one year later.
Most patients require 1-2 weeks off from work and cannot lift heavy objects or perform other physically taxing activities for 6 weeks. Light exercise is sometimes permitted beginning at three weeks. Specific recommendations regarding work and exercise will be made for each patient.
"Everyone that’s ever known me has called me Mrs. Just So. In other words, I am very particular and also a perfectionist in all areas. I couldn’t have picked a better plastic surgeon. My husband and I met Dr. Bartlett and didn’t even feel that we had to get a second opinion. No one can even tell that I had this done. People will say, “Oh, I love your haircut, you look so good,” and then other people I tell will say, “Oh my god, I want his number.” They say they’ve never seen anyone look so natural. Dr. Bartlett is a perfectionist and very tedious and is an artist. He listens and cares and even called me over the weekend to see how I was doing. His entire staff is very friendly and knowledgeable as well. I would recommend Dr. Bartlett to anyone!"
