Ears
What is Otoplasty or Surgery of the Ear
Prominent ears, or ears that “stick out”, make many individuals self-conscious. Otoplasty, or “ear set back”, can address this issue and boost confidence. Other ear issues caused by trauma or congenital malformations can also be addressed surgically, including torn earlobes or earlobes stretched from gauges.
Otoplasty Consultation
If you are considering an otoplasty, the first step is a confidential consultation with Dr. Bartlett. At this time, he will perform a medical evaluation and listen carefully to understand your goals. He will answer questions about the benefits and risks of ear surgery, describe the treatment process, and review the recommended time off from work and exercise.
It is common for patients to have asymmetry of their ears, (one ear may be more prominent or larger than the other). Dr. Bartlett will point out any unique aspects to your ear shape and how that will affect your surgical plan.
Otoplasty Procedure – What to expect
Otoplasty and other ear surgeries are performed by making incisions behind or on the front of the ear in a way that minimizes visible scarring. Internal stitches and cartilage sculpting reshapes the ear for a long-lasting result. Whether the procedure is performed under local anesthesia, sedation or general anesthesia, numbing medicine is place around the ear so that post-operative discomfort is minimized. At the end of the procedure a head wrap is placed.
Adult otoplasties are performed under local anesthesia or IV sedation. Some younger patients will require a general anesthetic.
1.5 to 3 hours. The exact duration of surgery will depend on the treatment plan, techniques used, and if there are other procedures performed during your procedure.
Most otoplasties are performed in an our AAAASF Certified office operating room. This confidential setting allows meticulous and personalized care.
Otoplasty Surgery and Recovery
Before the operation, Dr. Bartlett and his staff will review the details of the recovery process, providing instructions and prescription medications ahead of time so that you are well prepared. You will need to have a friend or relative take you home.
A “turban-like” bandage is worn for 5 to 7 days after the procedure in order to protect the ears from trauma as they heal. Sleep position must be altered to avoid sleeping on the ear. Slight elevation of the head on a pillow wedge is preferred. Button down shirts are preferred so that the bandage is not disturbed. Showers from the neck down or baths are permitted. Most patients are capable of working on their laptop during the first week after surgery, but stay close to home because of the bandage.
The first post-operative visit occurs at one week after surgery and the initial bandage is removed. Patients may shower and gently wash their hair however it is important to treat the ears gently, with no traction or rubbing. A headband is worn at night for 5 more weeks. Swelling and bruising may be present at one week but gradually subside by 2 to 3 weeks.
Patients are instructed not to participate in sports, rough activities, or swimming for 6 to 8 weeks. Light exercise is permitted at two weeks.
The final post-operative visit is at approximately three months.
