Breast Reconstruction – Autologous Reconstruction – Brookline

Published on January 16, 2015
Breast Reconstruction

Autologous breast reconstruction is a type of breast reconstruction technique that uses the existing muscle fat or skin tissue on your body to reshape the breast. There are a number of advantages that come with autologous breast reconstruction, and there are many donor sites that you can choose from. It is important to discuss your expectations with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Richard Bartlett before making any decisions.

Autologous reconstruction may look and feel more natural, as it employs your own tissue. There are no risks of implant complications such as breakage. Generally, there are four major donor sites that are used when grafting tissue to form the reconstructed breast. The upper stomach, lower stomach, upper back, and buttocks are areas where a “flap” of tissue can be taken.
