Gynecomastia

Have you ever wondered why the size of your breasts varies when compared to other men of your age and physical attributes? Having a chest size that is smaller is considered normal, but men with large breasts often feel uncomfortable with their physique. Large breasts in men is a very common condition caused by excess tissue. If you are among the estimated 40 to 60 percent of men suffering from excess tissue in either one or both breasts, you are not alone.

What is a Gynecomastia Surgery

Gynecomastia is a condition in which the breast tissue – not the fatty tissue – enlarges in boys or men. One of the first signs is a lump or fatty tissue under the nipple. Tenderness or soreness may be present. Gynecomastia can affect one or both breasts and can cause emotional distress and discomfort.

Common causes of gynecomastia include: hormone imbalance, medications (such as anti-androgens to treat prostate conditions, anabolic steroids and HIV medications), health conditions that affect testosterone production, substance use, aging and weight fluctuations.

Gynecomastia Consultation

If you are considering gynecomastia surgery in Boston, the first step is a confidential consultation with Dr. Bartlett. At this time, he will perform a medical evaluation and listen carefully to understand your goals. He will answer questions about the benefits and risks of gynecomastia surgery, describe the treatment process, and may discuss alternative treatments for men, including other male procedures and rhinoplasty if appropriate.

Dr. Bartlett will create and personalize your surgical plan. He will give you instructions on how to prepare for your gynecomastia procedure including specific recommendations for time off from work and exercise.

What to Expect During Gynecomastia Surgery

During the procedure, the glandular breast tissue is removed through direct excision around the nipple and/or liposuction. Sometimes when the breasts or weight changes have led to drooping of the skin (or ptosis), additional surgery is performed to remove and tighten the excess skin. Areolas that have enlarged or stretched can be reduced in size.

General anesthesia is recommended for this procedure.

2 to 3 hours. The exact duration of surgery will depend on the treatment plan, techniques used, and if there are other procedures performed during your procedure.

Gynecomastia surgeries are performed in our AAAASF Certified office operating room in the Boston, Massachusetts, area.

Gynecomastia Surgery Recovery Process

Dr. Bartlett and his staff will go over the details of the recovery process, providing instructions and prescription medications prior to surgery. A friend or family member is recommended to take you home.

After surgery, you will remain in a compression vest which is worn for 1 week at all times day and night. The vest is removed after 1 week to evaluate incisions. If healing is progressing normally, the vest is worn for an additional 2 weeks with the exception of a brief shower.

Patients are restricted from sports and vigorous activity for 6 weeks following surgery. Discomfort is mild and recovery is rapid. Pain medication is prescribed and is typically used for 2 or 3 days after surgery. “I am writing to you today to thank you from the bottom of our hearts! The surgery you performed on our son is just beautiful. This procedure was a very difficult decision (on our part) to make. We were hoping all would go well – but with little to no understanding of the outcome – we were nervous about putting our son through this procedure. We thank you for making this process that much easier by your professionalism. Our son’s self esteem ( just one week post op) has already improved tremendously. That in itself is a true gift for him…and we are so pleased with how it all turned out. Once again, thank you for everything.”
